ARTIST STATEMENT:
In my work, I am looking out at my surroundings and trying to capture the feeling of a moment. Creating representational art forces me to be present with my subject which engages the deeper parts of my psyche. Painting with oils gives me freedom to express the color of the natural world and challenges me to replicate the beauty of the mundane. Photography does a very good job of replicating the natural world, but the product often lacks depth of natural color. I enjoy using photography in my process in conjunction with observation and memory.
I grew up with television screens which programmed my mind to translate visual information cinematically. My mind is always creating compositions informed by cinema, the phone screen or the peripheral outline of my eyeglasses. I make work about windows which identify a boundary between inside and outside, the physical and the metaphysical. Drawing and painting are compulsions for me and I often create without much planning or forethought. I force myself to practice the act of looking in order to capture something familiar and I hope that the process allows for my thoughts to bleed through as symbols and icons.
